In some of China's major cities, people have begun to keep chickens as pets instead of cats and dogs. These chickens, freely roaming around the house, are given names; special outfits, small beds, and carry bags are purchased for them. As some owners take their pets for a stroll in car seats or baby strollers, social media posts related to pet chickens have garnered over 3.1 billion views.

The number of people raising chickens at home in regions like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong is on the rise. These chickens are not just pets but are treated with affection, given names, dressed in tiny hats and shoes, and when taken outside, they are transported in strollers or car seats.
In Guangdong, a woman named Aguai decided to raise the chicks that had unexpectedly hatched from three fresh eggs sent by her relatives. The videos she shared, documenting her relationship with the chickens, have enabled other city dwellers who are having similar experiences to become more visible.
Low maintenance costs and social media have boosted interest.
Some owners claim that chickens can distinguish words, respond to their names, and exhibit clear emotional reactions. It's noted that the monthly upkeep for a chicken can remain under 30 yuan, which is roughly less than four dollars.
As the trend grows, online stores have started selling chicken-specific clothing, beds, carry bags, and small accessories. Posts related to pet chickens have garnered over 3.1 billion views on Chinese social media.
While some chickens have been adopted after being saved from slaughter, it appears that this trend isn't limited to those who have given up meat consumption. Some owners who consider their chickens as family members openly continue to consume other poultry.
