Gearbox has finally announced that Borderlands 3 will get crossplay across Playstation, Xbox, and PC. The crossplay feature was blocked on Playstation in the past, but is now available due to the high demand of players.
Sony had a problem with allowing crossplay since it could affect competitive gameplay performance, such as PC players having an overwhelming advantage over console players due to the ease of controls. In June 2021, Playstation CEO Jim Ryan issued a statement noting that Sony has permitted and supported crossplay on a number of PS titles.
Gearbox Studios' recently released title, Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, came with crossplay support for all platforms except Playstation. The decision was made by Sony, but now it seems things have taken a turn.
Sony’s decision to allow crossplay was likely influenced by the realization that they could charge fees to the developers in adding the popular feature. Last year during the Epic Games VS Apple lawsuit, certain documents confirmed that Sony was indeed charging developers for the crossplay feature based on game popularity which obviously included Epic Games Fortnite.
Since Borderlands 3 and Tiny Tina's Wonderland now have crossplay support for Playstation consoles, Sony has changed the terms of the agreement and decided to waive all crossplay fees for all PS games.
Gearbox has also revealed the release date for their upcoming Tales game, which will be launched this year. The game will be a follow-up to Telltale's Tales from the Borderlands, which was released in 2014. The game will be created in the same style that Telltale used to create the game, but it will not involve Telltale in any way since the company has shut down and Gearbox now has complete control over the Borderlands franchise.
