Originally planned to take place in Nigeria, the competition was relocated to London due to widespread protest over a local case involving Amina Lawal, a Nigerian woman who was sentenced to death for having a child out of wedlock. Amidst such turbulence, Azra Akın, with her grace and elegance, clinched the title of Miss World 2002, making her the second Turkish woman to do so after Keriman Halis in 1932. Notably, this was the first time the title had been awarded to a country with a majority-Muslim population since 1954 when it was given to a beauty queen from Egypt.
