Designed with the concept of a hidden green space within the city, La Vallée Verte, completed in the city of Bordeaux, France, is an architectural marvel. Although it appears as modern apartment blocks from the outside, the structure houses a lush courtyard filled with plants on the inside. The project, consisting of 70 apartments, is noteworthy not only as a residential area but also for its environmentally conscious architectural approach.

However, the truly eye-catching aspect of the structure is not its exterior, but the verdant courtyard hidden within the heart of the blocks.

The building, situated on a triangular plot, is designed in such a way that the roof lines of the blocks do not obstruct each other's sunlight. This ensures that each building receives as much daylight as possible, while creating an entirely different world within. Upon entering the courtyard, one is greeted by an area covered in small trees, shrubs, and various types of plants.

The aim of the project was to create a sense of a natural valley rather than a conventional apartment courtyard. Therefore, the inner courtyard was designed not just as an area with a few plants on the ground, but as a vibrant landscape spreading across the floors.

The apartments overlook the inner courtyard, and pots of varying sizes are placed in each apartment's private loggia area. The types of plants used on the floors also vary. As a result, the building creates the effect of a layered green space that mimics a natural ecosystem, rather than a uniform garden.

A unique feature was added to the building for the maintenance of the plants. Small passage doors are located in the common walls of the loggia sections, allowing gardeners to move from one area to another. This transforms the green space in the center of the building from merely a decorative element into a living landscape that can be regularly maintained.

La Vallée Verte is a project that spans across a total area of 5,250 square meters, consisting of three blocks. The project includes a total of 70 apartments. One of the buildings features a nursery on the ground floor, which has its own open space.

Given the project's location on the banks of the Garonne River, the risk of flooding was taken into account in the design. Therefore, the ground-floor apartments were elevated to street level. This measure aims to ensure that in the event of potential floods, water would flow under the building instead of infiltrating the homes.
