An 18,000-Ton Mansion Was Moved in One Piece to Widen the Road
When plans were drawn up to widen Fuzuli Street in Baku, a historic mansion weighing 18,000 tons and built in 1908 stood in the way. Instead of demolishing the structure, which reached 52 meters in length and 20 meters in height, the authorities decided to move it intact. The mansion, detached from its foundation, was placed on hydraulic jacks with steel and concrete rails, and over the course of four days, it was shifted back by 10.5 meters.
The road project was posing a threat to the mansion built in 1908.
The stone mansion, located on Fuzuli Street in Baku, was built in 1908 by oil tycoon Isa Bey Hacınski. The structure, reaching approximately 52 meters in length and 20 meters in height, was calculated to have a total weight of 18,000 tons.
When the decision was made to widen the street, the building found itself in the path of the proposed road project. Rather than demolishing the historic structure, the option to shift it entirely backwards was adopted, which necessitated months of preparation for the move.
Steel rails and hydraulic jacks were installed under the mansion.
First off, the basement walls were reinforced and a rail system made of steel and concrete was installed beneath the structure. After the mansion's connection with the existing foundation was carefully severed, hydraulic jacks slowly moved the building along the rails.
The relocation process was completed between 23 and 27 April 2013, over a span of four days and approximately 40 working hours. At the conclusion of the operation, in which more than a hundred people participated, the building was positioned 10.5 meters away from its original location.
The structure has set a world record in its own category.
During the relocation, the walls, roof, and architectural integrity of the mansion were preserved. A separate foundation was prepared for the building that reached its new location, and the structure was permanently stabilized after approximately two weeks of procedures.
Weighing 18,000 tons, the mansion entered the Guinness World Records as the heaviest building ever moved in one piece. Thus, while making room for urban transportation, one of Baku's historic structures was also saved from demolition.
