The latest trend that has been the talk of the town on social media is the '80s photo' effect. Millions of users are uploading their photos to artificial intelligence applications to achieve a nostalgic look. However, Forensic Informatics Expert Prof. Dr. Ali Murat Kırık, has stated that these shares are far riskier than they appear.

Forensic IT expert Prof. Dr. Ali Murat Kırık, in his statement to TGRT News, emphasized that users joining the 80's trend are not merely sharing a photo. Kırık stated, 'The moment they upload their photo to an artificial intelligence system, they are transferring their personal data, including their face, to a digital service.'
The expert pointed out that details in the photo such as facial lines, eyes, nose, and jaw structure are visual data that distinguish the person from others. He added that uploading numerous photos of the same person taken at different times and from various angles increases the risk. According to Kırık, this situation paves the way for a more detailed facial profile of the person to be created in the digital environment.
"You Can Change Your Password, But You Can't Change Your Face": Critical Suggestions from the Expert
Highlighting that the most significant distinction of facial data from other personal data is its biometric nature, Kırık emphasized the difficulty of rectification in case of misuse by stating, 'You can change your password. You can change your phone number. But you can't change your face.' The expert advised users to review the privacy policy of the application before uploading photos and to understand where and how long the data is stored.
Kırık drew attention to the increased risks of identity impersonation, fake image production, and reputation attacks that could result from uploading high-resolution photos where the face is clearly visible to different platforms. The expert, who pointed out that details such as home address, school, workplace, or vehicle license plate that could be in the background of the photos may be shared unknowingly, stressed the need for extra caution in photos where children and family members appear. Kırık concluded his words by saying, 'Artificial intelligence can show us what we looked like in the '80s. However, what's important is to consider where the face we give to artificial intelligence today can be used tomorrow.'
