5,000 Old Toilets Crushed to Create a New Marine Habitat

In an effort to conserve water in New York, approximately 5,000 old toilets that were removed from schools were not discarded as waste. Instead, they were cleaned and broken down into small pieces. These porcelain fragments were then used to create artificial reefs at the bottom of Jamaica Bay, providing a habitat for tens of thousands of oysters.

The New York administration has launched an extensive initiative to replace the old and excessive water-consuming toilets in the city's public schools with more efficient models. In one of the initial stages of the project, approximately 5,000 porcelain toilets were removed from the schools. An exceptionally unusual use was found for the material, which was expected to be sent to the landfill under normal circumstances.

The toilets were not directly dumped into the bay. Metal and plastic parts on them were removed, porcelain surfaces were cleaned with pressurized water, and the material was broken down into pieces large enough for oysters to attach. Thus, parts that could pose a problem in terms of hygiene and environment were eliminated, leaving only durable porcelain behind.

Some of the prepared porcelain pieces were moved to the reef bed in Jamaica Bay. The remaining materials were utilized in place of the crushed stones normally used at the bottom of the vegetated channels that collect rainwater on New York streets. The very same toilets thus transformed into a material contributing both to the marine life and the city's rainwater management.

Oysters require hard surfaces on the sea floor to cling to in order to survive. However, due to overfishing, pollution, and alterations to the coastline, a significant portion of the old oyster reefs around New York Harbor have disappeared over time. One of the major challenges facing restoration efforts in Jamaica Bay was the diminishing availability of suitable ground for new oysters to settle.

By combining broken porcelain with oyster and scallop shells, four small recipient beds were created on the bay floor. A central breeding bed, composed of adult oysters and young oysters attached to shells, was placed nearby. The initial implementation, launched in 2016, utilized approximately 50,000 oysters.

The goal was for the larvae hatched from the eggs laid by adult oysters to settle on the beds made of porcelain and natural shells after moving around in the water for a while. The hard and durable surface of the porcelain provided a foundation for the young oysters to cling to and grow.

The purpose of the oysters being cultivated in the project is not to end up on dinner tables, but to rejuvenate the ecosystem in the bay. As oysters feed, they filter water through their bodies, sieving out certain particles. Under suitable conditions, an adult oyster can filter up to about 190 liters of water per day.

Oyster reefs also serve as habitats for fish and other marine life. Over time, their growing shell structures can reduce the energy of waves, thereby slowing the erosion of coastal wetlands. For this reason, the project is not merely an attempt at recycling; it is regarded as an environmental initiative that simultaneously supports water quality, biodiversity, and coastal resilience.

The 2016 study, which utilized approximately 5,000 toilets, was one of the initial stages of a larger restoration program in the region.
