Archaeological excavations carried out in the Men Sacred Area located in the Yalvaç district of Isparta, Turkey, led to a groundbreaking discovery that reshapes the history of Anatolia. The mysterious structure, assumed to belong to the agriculture goddess Demeter since 1912, has been scientifically confirmed to belong to the underground and moon goddess Hekate. This archaeological discovery, documented by the Archaeology Department of Süleyman Demirel University, put the missing pieces in place in the world of mythology.

How Was the Centuries-Old Archaeological Mystery Solved?

How Was the Centuries-Old Archaeological Mystery Solved?

At the 1600-meter summit of Gemen Mountain, a small temple was unearthed during the first excavations conducted in 1912-1913. Under the conditions of the period, it was thought that this structure belonged to Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and fertility, and for years it was referred to as the 'Small Temple' in the archaeological world.

However, meticulous studies carried out for 18 years under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Mehmet Özhanlı, a faculty member of the Archaeology Department at Süleyman Demirel University (SDÜ), put an end to this historical misconception. In the light of new findings, it was clearly documented that the temple was actually built for Hekate, one of the local and ancient goddesses of Anatolia.

The Missing Piece in Mythology: The Harmony of the Moon God and Hecate

The Missing Piece in Mythology: The Harmony of the Moon God and Hecate

One of the most important details emphasized by Prof. Dr. Özhanlı was the mythological consistency. The presence of Demeter in a sacred area built in the name of the Moon God Men was not consistent with mythological narratives. However, the new data obtained from the excavations pointed to the truth:

  • Three-Bodied Depictions: In the excavations, 'triformis' figures (three-bodied and three-headed), which are the classic depiction of Hekate ruling over the earth, sky, and sea, were found.

  • Crescent Detail: The crescent reliefs on the goddess's headdress (polos) were unearthed.

  • Logical Consistency: Hekate representing the dark side of the moon, death, and the underworld perfectly explained her having temples side by side with the Moon God Men.

Sacrificed Dog Graves Confirmed the Truth

Sacrificed Dog Graves Confirmed the Truth

In mythology, Hecate is a powerful figure who commands the three-headed Kerberos, known as the 'Hellhound' of the underworld god Hades, and her most sacred animal is the dog.

Two sacrificed dog graves found in the past at another excavation site in the region, Pisidia Antiocheia Ancient City, became one of the most striking evidences confirming the existence of this cult. It was determined that the original octagonal base where the goddess statue sat in the center (naos) of the temple also remained intact to this day. This structure, which was destroyed with the spread of Christianity, will be rebuilt in the future using the old materials.

Second Temple in Anatolia

This discovery is not just an academic achievement, it also carries significant tourism potential. After the Lagina Ancient City in Muğla Yatağan, this structure in Yalvaç became the second Hecate temple in Anatolia whose existence has been definitively documented.
