By definition, a romantic comedy ends happily. We envy those warm relationships that grow out of awkward, funny accidents. So why can't they happen in real life?

There is no room for a sad ending here. The love stories in these films are shaped by a chain of coincidences, and the moment when a character loses all hope is always brief.
Who wouldn't want to live a story where you meet your soulmate and everything ends well?
Bumping into a stranger, spilling coffee on them and finding out they are your new boss? Not very likely.
The genre depends on exaggerated coincidences. In real life, it is unlikely that you will collide with the love of your life on the street, spill coffee on them and then meet them again at a job interview. On screen, that is simply 'fate'.

Couples in romantic comedies usually split over a funny misunderstanding, and one big gesture fixes everything. In real life, communication problems rarely get resolved that easily.
The leads seem to have no worries, no money problems and barely any work.
Romantic comedy heroes are usually flawless. We rarely see them at work, and money is never an issue. Real people are emotionally more complicated, and not everyone's life runs like a perfect film set.
The morning routine
On screen, a character who is late for work still finds time for a coffee and a walk through the prettiest park in town. In real life, many of us are running for the bus.
So why do we love them? Because everything in that world is colorful, fun and ends well.
Romantic comedies take us away from real life and into a pink fairy tale. When life gets stressful, they offer an idealized world.
They also feed the idea of a soulmate and keep alive the hope that an ideal love is possible. Real life is messier, with complicated relationships and people who leave us deep in thought. In a romantic comedy, though, there is always hope, and difficulties are solved with ease.
