Is it permitted to fast on Ashura Day?

Is it permitted to fast on Ashura Day?

The word “Muharram” means to be respected or venerated. According to many religious sources, this month, called “the month of Allah” by the Prophet Muhammad, represents a period of intense divine blessings and abundance.

According to a hadith of Prophet Muhammad, “The most virtuous fast after Ramadan is the fast of Muharram, the month of Allah.” (Abu Dawud, Savm, 55; Tirmidhi, Savm, 40)

The 10th day of the month of Muharram is called “Ashura” and fasting on this day is sunnah according to some scholars. This is because the Prophet (pbuh) fasted on the day of Ashura and recommended it to Muslims.

After the fasting of Ramadan was made obligatory, the Prophet (pbuh) stated that those who wished to fast on Ashura could do so and those who did not need to do so did not need to (Bukhari, Savm, 69; Muslim, Sıyâm, 113126).

There are other hadiths in which the Prophet encouraged and recommended fasting on the 9th, 10th and 11th days of Muharram. In short, if you wish, you can fast on these blessed days, following the advice of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
