When a Country of 9,000 Ran Out of Land, It Turned to the Sea
One of the biggest obstacles to producing clean energy in small island nations is the lack of sufficient land to establish vast solar power plants. Tuvalu, located in the South Pacific, has found an innovative solution to this problem by placing solar panels not on land, but on water.
The system, installed over the Tafua Lagoon in Funafuti, consists of 184 floating solar panels. Completed in 2023, the project has the capacity to generate approximately 174 MWh of electricity annually.
When the land area was not enough, the lagoon was transformed into an energy field.
In small island nations like Tuvalu, land is incredibly valuable for housing, transportation, public services, and daily life. Therefore, it's not always feasible to cover a large area with solar panels.
This is precisely where the floating solar panel system installed on Tafua Lagoon comes into play. By utilizing the existing water surface for electricity generation, the system provides clean energy without competing for the limited land resources.
184 solar panels will save thousands of liters of diesel annually.
The floating solar panels are expected to reduce diesel fuel consumption by approximately 47,100 liters annually. This is particularly significant for Tuvalu, as small island nations often rely on imported fuels for electricity generation.
The system does not single-handedly meet all of Funafuti's energy needs. However, it emerges as a complementary solution due to its ability to decrease imported diesel consumption and enable clean energy production without utilizing land.
There's not always a need for land when it comes to solar energy.
The project in Tuvalu demonstrates that solar energy is not confined to being installed only on vacant lands or rooftops. Floating solar panels can offer an alternative solution, particularly for island nations and coastal cities that struggle with land scarcity.
Thus, Tafua Lagoon has transitioned from being merely a body of water to becoming an integral part of electricity production.
