Volkswagen Recalls 208K Vehicles Over Steering Defect
The German automotive giant, Volkswagen, has made a significant move in the US market. The company has decided to recall 208,724 vehicles due to a bolt defect detected in the steering system. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has stated that this issue could potentially lead to a loss of control. The recall affects Tiguan, Atlas, and Audi Q3 models that were manufactured between the years 2018 and 2021.
NHTSA has confirmed the bolt defect in the steering box.
According to a statement from the US regulatory body, the issue stems from the mounting bolt on the right side that connects the steering box to the chassis body. During the manufacturing process, if this bolt is not tightened to the required torque, it can loosen over time, causing the steering box to shift from its position. The NHTSA report emphasized that this situation could lead to the driver completely losing control of the steering, particularly increasing the risk of accidents during high-speed or sudden maneuvering situations.
The recall includes 2018 model year Tiguan, Atlas models between 2018 and 2019, and certain Audi Q3 units produced between 2019 and 2021. Volkswagen's Audi brand is also affected by the recall as it shares the same platform. This error, which emerged in the company's quality control processes, points to a periodic hiccup on the production line.
Volkswagen will replace the faulty screw free of charge.
Following the identification of the issue, Volkswagen has issued instructions to its authorized dealers. Owners of the affected vehicles will be able to replace the right-hand steering box assembly bolt free of charge. The company announced that it will notify the owners of the vehicles included in the recall by mail and that service appointments will commence in the coming weeks.
Recently, Volkswagen has been in the limelight due to both the challenges faced during the transition to electric vehicles and factory shutdowns. This recall comes at a critical juncture for the brand's reputation in the U.S. market. The NHTSA stated that it will share the completion rate of the recall process with the public in the months ahead.
