1. Why is it Effective?
Turning off a regular alarm is an action we do on 'autopilot.' However, solving a math problem or taking a photo of an object requires you to engage your Prefrontal Cortex, the area of the brain responsible for logical thinking and decision-making. This process helps to dissipate 'sleep inertia' (the grogginess caused by sleep) more quickly. Particularly, a task like taking a photo of a faucet in the bathroom, as shown in the video, compels you to move physically. Movement increases body temperature and sends a signal to the brain that it's time to wake up.
2. Is it Right and Beneficial?
If you have a habit of turning off the alarm and going back to sleep (known as snooze addiction), these apps are fantastic for establishing a new routine. Although the first few days might feel like torture, your brain will eventually adapt to this routine.
3. Drawbacks and Points to Consider
Waking up in the wee hours to a challenging math problem or a crying baby (as shown in the video) can cause you to start your day with high cortisol (stress hormone) levels, which can make you more tense throughout the day. If you still can't wake up despite these intense methods, the problem might not be the type of alarm, but the quality or duration of your sleep. It could be that your body is struggling to get up not because of the alarm, but due to fatigue.
