The Darkest Shade of Black Is Coming to Cars: It Looks Like a Black Hole
Black car paint has long been associated with a luxurious and powerful look. However, a new ultra-black coating developed by scientists is taking the perception of classic black paint to an entirely different level. This coating, developed by researchers from the NIPSEA Group, absorbs almost all visible light, making it difficult to discern the contours of the vehicle with the naked eye.
It absorbs 99.9% of light.
The new coating is a fusion of carbon black pigment and carbon nanotubes. Researchers aimed to create a stable structure suitable for automotive coatings by combining these two materials within a water-based composite.
The reason for the coating's deep black appearance is not solely due to its dark color. Its microscopic structure reduces the reflection of light from the surface. Light gets trapped and repeatedly scattered within the tiny indentations and protrusions in the coating, resulting in absorption. This, in turn, gives the surface a much deeper, almost two-dimensional appearance.
It still requires testing before it can be set in motion.
The ultra-black coating is seen as an attempt to transform the 'black hole' effect, akin to Vantablack, into a more applicable automotive paint. Previously, BMW showcased this effect with a concept car coated in Vantablack, but it wasn't easy to use such coatings in mass-produced vehicles due to production and durability issues.
One advantage of the new coating is that it can be applied using standard automotive spray techniques. Researchers also subjected the coating to water and high humidity tests, and it was reported that no significant paint defects or separations from the surface were observed after these tests.
However, this doesn't mean that ultra-black cars will hit the roads immediately. According to researchers, a series of tests need to be completed, including resistance to scratching, UV durability, corrosion, stone chipping, and long-term outdoor performance. So, even though the appearance is already quite impressive, we may have to wait a bit longer to see this paint in traffic.
