Tech Reviewer Tim Pan Tests Apple's Foldable iPhone Duo with 10,000 Folds
Ever since foldable phones first hit the market, one question has lingered: What happens to the crease down the middle of the screen over time? Apple unveiled its first foldable, the iPhone Duo, on September 9. It went on sale for $1,999 in the US and 229,999 TL in Turkey. With many people snapping one up as soon as it launched, the question once again shot to the top of the conversation.
Tim Pan, founder of the MediaStorm channel, first folded the iPhone Duo 500 times and showed side-by-side how the crease had changed. He then mounted the phone on a specialized folding machine, opened and closed it 10,000 times, and chilled it to minus 20 degrees Celsius. Comparison footage showed just how much deeper the crease had become.

So, what’s the average lifespan of a foldable phone?
The displays on foldable phones are made up of very thin layers that bend repeatedly at the hinge. Each time the phone folds, those layers undergo a tiny but permanent change in shape. Over time, this leaves a faint crease down the middle of the screen. The surface coatings and hinge designs manufacturers use don’t eliminate the crease entirely, but they can make it less noticeable from certain angles.
For someone who opens and closes their phone 100 times a day, 10,000 folds add up to about three and a half months of use. That means the test doesn’t show exactly how the phone will hold up over several years, but it does offer an idea of how the crease develops in the first few months.
Manufacturers typically rate foldable phone hinges for between 200,000 and 400,000 folds. Samsung rates the Galaxy Z Flip 5 for 200,000 folds, while Motorola’s rating is 400,000. At 100 folds a day, 200,000 folds would last about five and a half years. However, these figures come from machine tests conducted under laboratory conditions, and independent tests can produce widely varying results from one phone to another.
A permanent crease doesn’t, by itself, mean the screen is failing. It’s considered a normal feature of foldable displays and may become slightly more noticeable over time. More serious signs of damage include black lines around the crease, dead pixels, or layers of the display beginning to peel away. Since the iPhone Duo has only just been released, there’s not yet enough data to assess its long-term performance.
