Cha Cha Real Smooth went to streaming for the first time in June 2022, a few months after building hype following its memorable Sundance showing. This feature is from lesser-known indie star Cooper Raiff, who caught attentions at the film festival South By Southwest by writing, directing, and starring in his debut feature-length film, Shithouse (also known as Freshman Year). With Cha Cha Real Smooth, Raiff returns to those same positions again, and the reviews are positive once more. Here's what's going on with Raiff's sophomore feature.

Critics' Thoughts on 'Cha Cha Real Smooth'
Though Raiff is only in his twenties, his two films have impressed critics by managing well the typical indie drama/comedy clichés. Yes, Raiff's character Andrew is your typical young adult unsure of what life will bring, and his experience with the young Lola (played by newcomer Vanessa Burghardt) is more insightful than with most of the adults of the film. But fear not: Raiff is clear that the path he'll take will be his own, and on that account, Cha Cha Real Smooth delivers by the end. Whether you wanted the clichéd direction or not might depend on how much you like the film, but regardless Raiff and the exceptional group of actors around him make this an entertaining watch for all.
