Suna Selen is often cited as one of the most significant female performers in Turkish theatre, cinema, and television.
Born in Istanbul in 1939, the master artist draws attention not only with her acting but also with her deeply rooted family history. Selen, the granddaughter of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha, one of the important statesmen of the Ottoman Empire, and the great-granddaughter of Fatma Aliye Hanım, the first female novelist of Turkish literature, received education in law, painting, philosophy, and sociology before embarking on her artistic journey. Eventually, she followed her passion for theatre and graduated from the Beşiktaş Municipal Conservatory.
Having performed on stage for many years at the Dormen Theatre, Oda Theatre, and State Theatres, Suna Selen later took roles in some of the most unforgettable productions of Yeşilçam. She etched herself into memory with her performances in numerous productions, including her character as the Evil Queen in the film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Sahte Kabadayı, Gönderilmemiş Mektuplar, Zincirbozan, and many more. Throughout her career, she has won numerous awards, securing her place among the most respected actors of Turkish cinema.
The personal revelations made by Suna Selen have been consecutively making the headlines recently.
During an appearance on a show, a veteran actress who was once married to Münir Özkul, a legendary figure in Turkish cinema, shared unknown details about their marriage that caused quite a stir.
She had been with Münir Özkul for approximately 14 years, six of which they were married. Contrary to public perception, she revealed that their relationship was not a grand love story. She was quoted as saying:
'Münir told me, 'I need fresh blood. You are too serious.' We were actually just friends. We were never truly lovers. In a sense, we weren't really husband and wife either.'
Her remarks sparked a wide reaction on social media, and the seasoned actress also shared an unknown detail about their daughter Güner Özkul's name for the first time.
According to her, Münir Özkul's first wife, Şadan Hanım, wanted their children to also have her name. Suna Selen accepted this request without hesitation. Therefore, their daughter's name became Güner Şadan Özkul.
Selen also described their divorce process as quite calm. She stated that one day, Münir Özkul said to her, 'Şadan, you divorced me, now divorce her too.' To which she responded, 'Okay, let's get a divorce.'
The revelations that Suna Selen brought to light this time, however, reach back to an even earlier period.
In 1957, Selen married painter Cem Kabaağaç. She spoke of enduring severe betrayals during her first marriage, which lasted three and a half years.
The artist revealed that her first husband had cheated on her approximately 35 times, stating, 'He cheated on me about 35 times in 3.5 years.'
However, the part that generated the most discussion on social media was the story of her catching her husband in the act.
According to Suna Selen's account, she went home one day to catch her husband with another woman. He tried to block her from entering the bedroom. The veteran actress then went straight to the room by passing between his legs.
Suna Selen shared this on İzzet Çapa's show, saying:
'My husband opened the door, I intended to go in. He stood in front of me in the corridor. He said, 'Don't go that way.' While he was standing in front of me, he spread his legs. I then dove between his legs straight into the bedroom. The lady inside said to me, 'I'm leaving, let me fasten my bra and go,' and I fastened her bra.'
