Spain Shuts US Bases to Israel-Iran Strikes After Trump's Trade Threat
Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been under the fire of Trump's criticisms for a while now. Trump, who chastised him for not boosting the defense budget and recently threatened to cut off trade due to Sanchez's refusal to open air bases in Spain to the US, prompted a response from Sanchez. From his X account, he posted a message stating 'No to war'.
He underscored their commitment to avoid repeating the same blunder that the US made with the Iraq invasion.

The key takeaways from Sanchez's address are as follows;
Spain remains steadfast in the face of this calamity. We acknowledge that the primary responsibility of governments is to enhance the quality of life for their citizens, to devise solutions to challenges, not to exacerbate their living conditions.
Furthermore, it is entirely intolerable for leaders who fail to meet this obligation to use the fog of war as a smokescreen to hide their shortcomings and to enrich a select few in the process.
Some 23 years ago, a different U.S. administration pulled us into a conflict in the Middle East. Back then, the justification for this war was the elimination of Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction, the promotion of democracy, and the assurance of global security.
Yet, in hindsight, it seems to have yielded the exact opposite outcome; it sparked the most significant wave of instability our continent has witnessed since the collapse of the Berlin Wall.
The Iraq War resulted in a substantial surge in jihadist terrorism, a severe migration crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean, and a general escalation in energy costs.
In light of these events, the position of the Spanish government is unambiguous and unwavering. This stance aligns with the one we have consistently held in Ukraine and Gaza.
First and foremost, we reject any breaches of international law, which safeguards us all — particularly the most vulnerable civilian population.
Secondly, we reject the idea that the world's issues can only be resolved through conflict and warfare.
And lastly, we refuse to repeat the errors of the past.
