Our National Football Team, who embarked on the 2026 FIFA World Cup journey with high hopes, unfortunately, saw their adventure cut short, far sooner than anticipated.

After suffering a loss to Australia in their first match, our national team bid farewell to the tournament at the group stage following a 1-0 defeat to Paraguay in their second group encounter. The inability of Turkey, who had numerous opportunities against an opponent that played with 10 men for nearly half the match, to find the back of the net, caused significant disappointment among football fans.

Following the match, the football world was abuzz with commentary, one of the most notable coming from singer Sinan Akçıl. This was particularly interesting as Akçıl was also the creator of the specially prepared anthem 'Türkler Geliyor' (The Turks are Coming) for the national team ahead of the World Cup.

Turkey, returning to the World Cup stage after a 26-year hiatus, had entered the tournament with high expectations. The national team, under the management of Vincenzo Montella and boasting a young and talented squad, was touted as a beacon of hope for many football enthusiasts.

However, things did not go as planned on the pitch. After the defeat against Australia, our national team went into the match against Paraguay with a must-win attitude, but were shocked by a goal conceded in the very first minute. Despite dominating the second half and having numerous clear-cut chances, including shots that hit the post, Turkey was unable to find the elusive goal.

The players' disappointment was clearly visible on camera after the match, and Arda Güler's apology also made headlines. Consequently, despite their upcoming match against the USA, Turkey officially bowed out of the World Cup.

In order to fuel the national excitement prior to the commencement of the tournament, a special World Cup anthem was crafted with the backing of the Turkish Football Federation.

In order to fuel the national excitement prior to the commencement of the tournament, a special World Cup anthem was crafted with the backing of the Turkish Football Federation.

The anthem titled 'Türkler Geliyor' (The Turks are Coming), for which both the lyrics and music were crafted by Sinan Akçıl, was released on May 14, 2026.

In the anthem, traditional Turkish musical instruments such as the kemenche, zurna, kaval, darbuka, and asma drum were incorporated, creating a powerful arrangement that reflected a stadium atmosphere. Sinan Akçıl was accompanied by Resul Dindar and Enes Yolcu in the song.

Upon its release, the anthem sparked much discussion on social media, dividing fans into two camps. Some users praised the song for its energy and the nationalistic sentiments it evoked, while others expressed their preference for anthems of different styles.

Following the national team's defeat against Paraguay, Sinan Akçıl voiced his disappointment with poignant words in a post on his social media account.

In his post, Akçıl stated, 'Dear audience, it seems like a water break of at least 4 years for Turkey 👍🏻 Such a shame. If I had known, I wouldn't have named the anthem 'The Turks are Coming', but rather 'The Turks are Leaving'.'
