The height of the pillow used during sleep directly determines the angle at which the neck vertebrae will remain throughout the night. A pillow that is either too high or too flat can lead to the chin exerting pressure towards the chest and the neck muscles staying tense until morning.

A content creator shared a video explaining precisely how sleeping with a pillow of incorrect height can harm the neck and spine, using comparative visuals. The video raised awareness among many people about their physical problems and the difficulties they experience at night.

What exactly do the positions we choose throughout the night change in our bodies?

Sleeping on one's side leaves a large gap between the shoulder and the head, leading to a sagging of the neck area. This situation becomes one of the primary causes of waking up with severe neck pain in the morning. Although people tend to put their arms under the pillow to support this void, this action can lead to numbness in the hands due to nerve compression in the middle of the night. When sleeping face down, having the head turned to one side for hours distorts the spine, triggering chronic muscle tension. Many people cannot comprehend the pain they experience upon waking up in the morning. In fact, the phrase 'waking up as if beaten' becomes our norm as we age.

The problems are not limited to the neck and back area either. When sleeping on the back, having the head excessively high or unsupported distorts the angle by bringing the chin closer to the chest. This posture narrows the airway, paving the way for mouth breathing and snoring, and in the long run, can lead to distortion of facial posture and sagging of the chin. Ergonomic pillows that offer zero-degree alignment and have special indentations, on the other hand, prevent pain by keeping the spine in its natural plane, encourage nasal breathing, and support overall posture health. Therefore, we need to pay attention to the position we are in throughout the night, our bed, and especially the pillow we use. Sedentary lifestyle, excessive phone usage, prolonged sitting, which are already problems of our age, damage our spine health, and further enlargement of this damage throughout the night can lead to more serious problems in the future.
