This system is a self-service shopping model, known as the "Honesty Hut", which is based entirely on social trust and is quite prevalent in Norway.
These quaint little huts, often encountered on nature trails, at the foot of mountains, or in the middle of forested areas, never have their doors locked. Upon entering, you'll find shelves stocked with ready-to-eat dried meals, snacks, chocolates, and coffees for hikers and mountaineers. There's no attendant waiting on you, no cash register, and most of the time, no security camera. After selecting the items you want, you check the price list hanging on the wall. Payment is made online via popular mobile payment apps in Norway by scanning the QR code also located on the wall. In other words, the system operates entirely on the honesty and conscience of the individual.
Such honesty-based shopping models thrive in certain parts of the world where crime rates are exceptionally low, and levels of prosperity and mutual trust are high. Alongside Norway, similar unmanned rural shops and mountain huts are frequently found in other Scandinavian countries like Sweden and Finland. As we venture further into the heart of Europe, it's quite common to come across small wooden cabinets in the Swiss and Austrian Alps where farmers leave fresh cheese, milk, honey, or eggs along hiking trails, accompanied by a piggy bank or QR code.
