Deniz Göktaş's Arrest Sparks Wave of Celebrity Reactions and Online Support
Comedian Deniz Göktaş has been arrested as part of an investigation that has been closely followed by the public for days. Göktaş, who was initially detained within the scope of the investigation initiated due to his statements in his standup show named 'Dead Sea', which has been viewed millions of times on YouTube, was arrested by the Peace Criminal Judgeship after his deposition at the prosecutor's office.
The arrest of Deniz Göktaş has caused a significant stir in the art world. Following the decision, numerous celebrities did not remain silent. Deniz Göktaş's stand-up show titled "Dead Sea," which was staged at Harbiye Open Air on June 1st and later published on YouTube, rapidly garnered millions of views.
The show, which has created a wide resonance on social media with its political satire and references to current events, has become the center of controversy due to some of its segments. Following the sharing of excerpts from the show, numerous applications were made to the Public Prosecutor's Office in Istanbul, and an investigation was initiated.
Göktaş, who was on vacation abroad, had refuted the allegations that he 'fled' and announced that he would return to Turkey. The comedian, who was detained during passport control at Istanbul Airport, was referred to the Çağlayan Courthouse after the procedures at the police station.
During his approximately two-hour interrogation by the prosecutor, Deniz Göktaş did not accept the allegations directed at him.
The comedian stated that the show has been staged for about three years and has been watched live by more than a hundred thousand people, asserting that he had no intention of belittling religious values.
Deniz Göktaş was arrested by the Criminal Court of Peace to which he was referred after his interrogation by the prosecutor. As part of the investigation against him due to his remarks in the stand-up show 'Dead Sea,' which has been viewed millions of times on YouTube, an arrest warrant was issued on charges of 'insulting the President' and 'openly belittling the religious values adopted by a section of the society.' Göktaş's defense that his show should be evaluated entirely within the framework of humor, satire, and social criticism, and that he did not aim to belittle or hurt anyone, was not deemed sufficient by the court.
