Çukur Star Damla Sönmez Opens Up About Why She Became An Actress
Damla Sönmez, remembered by many viewers as Efsun from the hit series Çukur, was a guest on 'Aslı Şafak'la İşin Aslı', a talk show on Bloomberg HT. Her candid answers about her career quickly became a talking point on social media. Damla Sönmez spoke about the moment she faced her own arrogance years ago, explained why she chose acting in the first place and responded to the pressure to constantly share her life online, revealing a far more reserved side than the strong characters she plays on screen.
From Karamel in Emret Komutanım to Efsun in Çukur, Damla Sönmez has built a long and varied career.
Born in 1987, Damla Sönmez started acting at a young age in series such as Camdan Pabuçlar and Omuz Omuza, and won over a wide audience in 2008 as Karamel in Emret Komutanım. After Bir Aşk Hikâyesi, Güllerin Savaşı and Masum Değiliz, she became a fan favourite as Efsun in Çukur, which began in 2019. Her most recent projects include Aziz, Maviye Sürgün and Kötü Kan.
On the big screen, her performance in the film Sibel earned her awards both in Türkiye and abroad. In July, Damla Sönmez married her longtime partner İlkay Akıncı in a simple ceremony.
Damla Sönmez candidly described the period in her late twenties when she confronted her own arrogance.
Talking to host Aslı Şafak, Damla Sönmez recalled confiding in a friend in her late twenties and saying, 'I think I'm so arrogant that I can't even admit to myself that I'm arrogant.' She described that realisation as a moment of awakening.
Asked whether she can live without judging others, she said that on social media everyone seems to know everything and people are treated far too harshly. She added that she tries to stay calm within herself, because living in constant anger wears a person out.
Damla Sönmez said she chose acting because she cannot properly express her feelings in daily life.
Damla Sönmez said she struggles to understand the expectation that she should post constantly and always be visible. While she understands that people want to know her better, she explained that she chose this profession because she did not know how to bring certain emotions to the surface.
'I am here because I can't express myself properly in my daily life. So you can't expect me to share every hour of my day on camera,' she said, adding that she expresses her feelings by sheltering behind other characters and stories.
She also named the turning point of her career: the Golden Orange award she won in 2009 for the film Bornova Bornova, which she said gave her the freedom to choose her roles. Even though it did not bring her instant fame in popular culture, she noted that the industry began to see her as a good actress.
