The French consumer group UFC-Que Choisir tested the nonstick coatings on six air fryer models for PFAS, widely known as “forever chemicals.” The results were reassuring: none of the PFAS banned over health concerns were found in the appliances.

Here are the details…

The models tested were the Ninja AF101C, Ninja Foodi AF300EU, Philips NA221/00, Tefal Easy Fry and Grill XXL EY801D, Princess 182254 and Inventum GF500HLD. The laboratory analyzed the nonstick coatings on these appliances.

The association noted that air fryer manufacturers promote healthy cooking, even though PFAS are a primary component of nonstick coatings.

No PFOA, PFOS, or PFHxS was detected in any model.

No PFOA, PFOS, or PFHxS was detected in any model.

These three substances are now banned because of their harmful effects. PFOA, which was used for many years in nonstick coatings, is classified as carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Its production, export, and import are prohibited in Europe.

The only substances detected in the appliances were fluoropolymers such as PTFE, the main component of Teflon.

PTFE only releases particles at around 260°C, and air fryers don’t reach that temperature.

PTFE is also a type of PFAS. However, based on current evidence, it doesn’t appear to pose a health risk at normal cooking temperatures.

The association recommends using wooden or silicone utensils in the air fryer to avoid scratching the coating and rack. This helps prevent the release of the substance during everyday use.

Even if they pose no apparent risk during use, fluoropolymers remain an environmental concern.

Even if they pose no apparent risk during use, fluoropolymers remain an environmental concern.

Fluoropolymers can persist in the environment for a long time without breaking down. As a result, both their production and the waste generated when products reach the end of their useful lives remain unresolved challenges.

In the association’s January 2024 pan test, 17 of the 70 PFAS compounds it screened for were found in eight Teflon-style nonstick pans. Low levels of PFAS were also detected in a ceramic-coated Tefal pan marketed as “PFAS-free.”
