You may have come across videos on social media of tourists who have experienced peculiar stares during their travels in China. One incident that particularly drew criticism was when a crowd gathered around a black family sitting in a park, watching them as if they were a movie.

This isn't just happening to people of color. Numerous tourists encounter a similar situation. So, why do tourists in China often receive peculiar looks?

Although China boasts a colossal population, it is predominantly homogeneous in structure. Particularly when you venture outside of metropolises like Beijing and Shanghai, it's possible that the local populace has never encountered a foreigner in their daily lives. Unusual physical features are a real point of fascination for the Chinese. If you're taller than average, you're bound to draw attention. Moreover, being blonde, red-haired or having colored eyes piques curiosity. Given that thick facial or body hair is rare among Chinese men, they find such features particularly intriguing.
While in Western culture staring at someone is considered rude, the rules are not as stringent in China. When something captures their interest, they don't shy away from examining it. This is not a sign of disrespect, but simply a manner of expressing their reaction.
