A Special Bridge Was Built for Animals to Mate Safely!
In the city of Shenzhen, China, special ecological bridges have been constructed for wild animals whose habitats have been fragmented due to intense urbanization and roads. These crossings, named Kunpeng Trail, assist animals in safely traversing to the other side, foraging for food, and reconnecting with their species during mating seasons.
Infrared cameras have revealed that species such as the leopard cat and wild boar are utilizing these bridges.

Due to congested roads and highways, animals whose habitats have been severed from each other can now safely cross to the other side thanks to these special passages.
The bridges, named Kunpeng Trail, are different from traditional pedestrian paths designed solely for humans. While part of these structures is allocated for pedestrians, a large portion is arranged with plants, soil, rocks, and small habitats, resembling the natural environment of wild animals.
In this way, the bridge serves as a natural corridor, connecting two green spaces within the city. The aim is to enable species such as the leopard cat, wild boar, and birds to move without encountering traffic dangers.
Bridges are aiding the reproductive cycle of animals.
Rapid urbanization doesn't just shrink animal habitats; it also makes it harder for the same species to reach each other. This situation can particularly lead to a decrease in genetic diversity and a drop in reproduction rates in isolated populations.
The Kunpeng Trail bridges were specifically designed to address this issue. As forested areas separated by roads are reconnected, it becomes easier for animals to cross over to the other side during mating seasons and meet their own kind.
Infrared cameras were installed in the area to see if the bridges were actually being used by the animals. Footage revealed that leopard cats, wild boars, and various bird species were crossing the bridges. This demonstrated that the structures had been adopted by wildlife and were not just an architectural project.
Separate paths were designed for humans and animals.
One of the most notable features of ecological bridges is the planning of human and animal crossings on the same structure, but in separate areas. While a portion of the bridges is designed as a walking path for pedestrians, the other portion is entirely dedicated to wildlife.
The area allocated for animals incorporates natural vegetation, stone passages, soil ground, and shaded areas. In addition, to avoid disturbing especially nocturnal species, bright illumination during the night hours is avoided.
This dual-corridor system utilized in the bridges allows for the safe continuation of wildlife while human mobility persists within the city. The project is highlighted as one of the examples striving to balance nature and human life in the same space amidst growing cities.
