During pregnancy, sudden and excessive swelling of the face, hands, and feet can sometimes signal the onset of Preeclampsia, also known as pregnancy poisoning. But what exactly is this condition referred to as pregnancy poisoning?

Preeclampsia, a condition characterized by high blood pressure and protein loss in urine, typically emerges after the 20th week of pregnancy. Contrary to popular belief, it has no relation to an external poison; it is entirely a systemic disorder related to the placenta and vascular structure. During this process, blood vessels start to leak, causing blood pressure to soar uncontrollably.

Excessive Edema: The overnight 'balloon-like' swelling of the face, hands, and eyelids, as shown in the video, is a result of this vascular leakage.

Organ Damage: The high pressure strains the kidneys, liver, and brain, leading to severe headaches, vision impairment, or right abdominal pain.

Impact on the Baby: The baby's development may slow down due to the reduced blood flow to the placenta.

The only definitive treatment is delivery. If the condition is mild, the baby is allowed to grow as much as possible under doctor supervision, with the aid of blood pressure medication and bed rest. If the situation poses a life-threatening risk to the mother or baby, an emergency delivery is planned regardless of the gestation week. The mother's values usually return to normal shortly after delivery.
