Why TFF President Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu Must Resign
The excitement of the 2026 World Cup ended prematurely and painfully for Turkey. The National Football Team, facing Paraguay in their second match of the tournament, left the field defeated after conceding a single goal, bidding an early farewell to their cup dreams and the tournament itself.
This defeat swiftly sparked significant backlash and transformed into a crisis within the football community. The ineffective performance on the field, administrative crises off the field, and ongoing tensions throughout the tournament led directly to the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) management being held accountable. The public is calling for the resignation of all those involved in this failure, primarily TFF President Ibrahim Hacıosmanoğlu and coach Vincenzo Montella.
As the fury of football fans continues, the question 'Why should the TFF President resign?' has been answered point by point.
"The national team wasn't eliminated, arrogance was."
Zeki Kayahan Coşkun:
'✅ The National Team was not eliminated...
What was eliminated were the villas, proposed as bonuses to footballers, the legality of which is controversial...
Nature, soil, trees, and the creatures who called the villa land home, emerged as the champions...
✅ The National Team was not eliminated...
The mindset that saw a football tournament as more than just that, was eliminated...
The propaganda that was presented as if it was not for the World Cup, but for a Defense Industry Fair, with tanks, rifles, and weapons, was eliminated...
The mentality preoccupied more with mustaches, hair, and symbols than with the game and the field, was eliminated...
✅ The National Team was not eliminated...
The mentality that relied more on slogans, shows, and demagoguery than on the game on the field was eliminated...
Arrogance, condescension, intolerance, and favoritism were eliminated...
The arrogance that saw criticism as hostility, questioning as betrayal, success as a right, and failure as a coincidence, was eliminated...
Humility, merit, and wisdom emerged as the champions...
✅ The National Team was not eliminated...
Montella, who didn't even have the potential to manage an ordinary team, and the Federation President who spoke harshly, were eliminated...
Football, like any other job...
No matter how much you dress it up, it always comes back to the truth...
No matter how many slogans you come up with, it always comes back to the game...
No matter how much noise you make, it always comes back to the result...
What made 2002 special in the World Cup was not just the third place...
It was the sincerity that surrounded that team...
Every segment of the society saw a part of themselves in it, without feeling excluded...
Unfortunately, we lost the sympathy before the success, the stance before the result, and the football before the show...
Get well soon...'
"We were saying, 'We'll return from New York with the trophy on July 20th.' Yet, we bid farewell to the tournament on June 20th."
Ersin Düzen:
'The federation has also failed to manage this situation properly. Let me be clear, the TFF President, İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu, should resign immediately. He is the primary responsible party for this process reaching this point. He was saying, 'We will return from New York with the cup on July 20.' Yet, we said goodbye to the tournament on June 20.
Who was the one causing division while we were trying to solve things in unity and solidarity? It was TFF President İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu. He twisted the support given by Turkey's most successful coach, Fatih Terim, into something else and transformed the society. He turned people into vultures, into hyenas. So, what happened then? What did you gain? What will you say now? Are you not going to be held accountable?'
In fact, we had lost the match yesterday. Montella came out and said, 'We were not shown respect.' How were you not shown respect? 80 million people inside the country, millions abroad showed respect. What else was supposed to be done? Everyone showed love. What should have happened? They should take a look at the conditions under which the African players arrived here. You never experienced scarcity even for a day, may God grant you more. But what's with this spoiled behavior? This is not how it should be.'
"The second round of matches kicked off, and both Haiti and we threw in the towel."
Erman Toroğlu:
'The blame should be placed on the football federation. They said, 'There's a significant temperature difference between where the National Team trained and where they played.' When asked why they didn't train nearby, they replied, 'We got what was left because we were the last to join.' Couldn't we have pushed our luck a bit more? It's important to know whether our local citizens made any contact with our citizens there. Fatih Terim said, 'Wait.' He was right when he said a lot could change. But the reaction from the head of the TFF was unbelievable. The guy should be grateful he wasn't punched.
Can we apply these rules here as well? The 5-second rule of covering your mouth with your hand. In our league, VAR seems to only work for the big teams. If you can't say 'don't you dare,' you'll be eliminated from the World Cup.'
He responded to Fatih Terim's words with the phrase, "Hyenas, vultures."
Following Turkey's initial defeat in the World Cup, Fatih Terim had advocated for a tolerant approach towards the National Team throughout the tournament. Terim had stated, 'We should essentially be a source of morale for those kids, the coach, the coaches, the federation, and those supporting us there. We should postpone both sadness and joy until after the tournament. Even the calling to account. We have plenty of time for our questions, and they are ready with their answers.'
On the other hand, Ibrahim Hacıosmanoğlu addressed the experienced coach with the words 'Hyenas, vultures'.
'We are in a desert-like place. There are hyenas in the desert, and there are vultures. Hyenas attack in packs from below, while vultures hover above, looking for anyone who might be disappointed or in a weak spot to swoop down and seize. It was also very effective in motivating the entire team, to see how many vultures, how many hyenas we have among us, waiting for the first match, seizing such an opportunity, presenting things that didn't happen as if they did. I leave them to the Turkish people. But their efforts will be in vain. Let's say we weren't successful in this tournament. This year we have moved up to the A League, we will play matches with Italy, France, and Belgium.
I was very disappointed with Fatih Terim. Of course, we will give the best response to these vultures and hyenas, but the best response must come from our brothers on the field.'
She remained silent towards the sexual assault perpetrator, polarizing football...
The elimination following the defeat against Paraguay was merely the tip of the iceberg. The urgent calls for the resignation of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) management from football fans and sports authorities are rooted in deeper crises that have accumulated over the season and plunged Turkish football into chaos:
6. Despite the sexual assault allegations against him, footballer Atakan Karazor has been included in the national team squad for years, with the TFF management remaining silent on the matter. It emerged that the player's absence from this tournament squad was not due to moral reasons, but rather a forced circumstance resulting from the USA's policy of not granting visas to sexual assault perpetrators.
7. Allegations regarding luxury villas, the construction of which is legally questionable and were purportedly to be given as bonuses to players before the tournament, hit the headlines like a bombshell. The TFF management made no statement in response to these allegations.
8. The President of the TFF chose to burn bridges with the clubs that were the driving force of the league throughout the season. Instead of establishing a constructive dialogue with club managements, he consistently used a harsh language that created polarization.
9. The referee scandals in the Super League throughout the season and the inconsistent decisions in the VAR system dragged Turkish football into a state of utter chaos. The TFF's inadequacy in resolving the referee crises completely overshadowed the competition on the field.
