Why Does Your Microwave Plate Turn Left Sometimes and Right Others?
You may have noticed that when heating food in the microwave, the turntable rotates clockwise in one instance and counter-clockwise in the next. Although this might be perceived as a malfunction, it's actually completely normal and related to the operation of the motor that spins the plate.
So, why does the plate spin and what determines its direction?
The reason for the plate's rotation is the uneven cooking nature inherent in microwave ovens.
Cooking in a microwave might not always be as uniform as frying or grilling. Consequently, certain parts of the food might heat up more than others.
The rotating plate aids in cooking the food more evenly, fulfilling this task regardless of its direction of rotation. In addition, the following steps also contribute to a more uniform heating of the food:
Stirring and Turning: Stirring and turning the food during heating helps to reduce hot spots caused by uneven cooking.
Waiting Time: It's necessary to adhere to the cooking and waiting times indicated on the package. The waiting time is a crucial part of the cooking process to ensure the food reaches a safe temperature.
The direction of rotation for the synchronous motor that spins the plate is reestablished each time the oven is activated.
Most microwave ovens employ relatively cheap synchronous AC motors to rotate their turntables. These motors have the capability to rotate in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions. Manufacturers often opt for these inexpensive motors as a cost-saving measure.
The direction in which the motor will rotate depends on the position of the motor when the oven is switched on. Unless there is a mechanical obstruction, this change in direction occurs randomly with each use. Hence, the plate might turn to the right in one instance and to the left in the next.
Manufacturers assert that this is completely normal and that the direction of rotation is dependent on the motion at the start of the motor's operating cycle. The label on a plate motor, like the one shown in the image, indicates a power of 2.5 watts and a rotation rate of 4.2 to 5 revolutions per minute.
It's normal for the plate to change direction, however, if it doesn't rotate at all, that could be a sign of a problem.
If your plate is not rotating, these points need to be checked:
Correct Placement: The plate needs to be firmly seated on the plate support, with the correct side facing up.
Packaging Materials: For newly purchased ovens, ensure that the protective materials on the plate and the band in the center have been removed.
Do Not Operate Without the Plate: The microwave oven should not be operated without the rotating plate in place.
If the plate still does not rotate despite these checks, it's necessary to seek assistance from technical service.
