Why Do Some Homes in Europe Have Two Toilets Side by Side?
The culture of restrooms varies from country to country. For instance, in certain parts of Europe, you might come across two toilets sitting side by side. And no, it's not because couples can't bear to be apart :)
But then, why are there side by side toilets?
Things are not as you think!
Our habits vary greatly from culture to culture. What seems normal to us might be considered quite strange to someone living in a different country, especially when it comes to bathroom habits.
For instance, the 'double toilets' seen in the image might strike us as rather odd. However, in various European countries like Italy, France, and Portugal, this is quite commonplace. The reason for the side-by-side toilets is not for couples who can't bear to be apart.
One of these toilets is a regular one, while the other is a bidet.
So, a single individual is using both toilets, one after the other.
Therefore, it wouldn't be entirely accurate to refer to both as 'toilets'. While we may be accustomed to the bidet sprayer within the toilet bowl, it's not as common in other countries. In homes equipped with a bidet, an individual who has just used the toilet then moves to the other fixture to cleanse themselves. Bidets, initially designed as separate units in European countries, are named after the French word for 'small horse', inspired by the user's sitting position.
Over time, fixed and integrated designs have been developed, and today, with both mechanical and electronic models available, bidets have become an indispensable part of modern bathrooms.
You can come across different models of bidets in various countries, and their popularity is increasing with each passing year.
