Why Did Childhood Vaccines Leave a Round Scar on Our Left Arm?
Many people have a small, round scar on the upper part of their left arm, a remnant from their childhood. While no other signs of childhood vaccinations remain, this scar continues to persist, even as the years roll by.
So, which vaccination does this scar originate from and why doesn't it ever fade away?
This round mark on the arm is largely a remnant of the BCG vaccine administered against tuberculosis.
The BCG vaccine, an acronym for Bacille CalmetteGuérin, has been used against tuberculosis (TB) since 1921 and has been administered to more than 3 billion people to date. The vaccine contains a weakened form of the bacterium known as Mycobacterium bovis.
The World Health Organization recommends that a single dose of the BCG vaccine be administered to infants in areas with a high risk of tuberculosis as soon as possible after birth. The vaccine is typically administered on the upper part of the left arm.
The reason for the permanence of the permission is that, unlike many other vaccines, this vaccine is administered directly into the skin.
While many vaccines are administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously, BCG is applied intradermally, that is, directly into the skin. It's at this point that the immune system reacts to the bacteria in the vaccine, and the process unfolds as follows:
Swelling Blister: Immediately after the vaccine, a swelling blister can form at the injection site.
Wound: This blister can turn into a pustule or a small wound after about two weeks.
Healing: Over time, the wound starts to scab over. This process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.
Permanent Scar: During the healing process, a tissue different from normal skin forms, leaving behind a round scar that lasts a lifetime.
The size of the immune response, or its complete absence, does not solely indicate whether the vaccine is effective or not.
The size and shape of the scar varies from person to person. While most people are left with a round, indented mark, some individuals who receive the vaccine do not have a visible scar at all. In some cases, red and raised scars known as keloids can be seen at the injection site.
Experts point out that the scar on the arm does not indicate the level of protection against tuberculosis. The greatest benefit of the vaccine, however, is that it reduces the risk of severe progression of tuberculosis in young children.
Another possible source of the similar marks on the arms of older people could be the smallpox vaccine.
Certain marks observed on older generations are remnants of the vaccination against smallpox. This vaccine was administered by repeatedly puncturing a small area on the upper arm with a special bifurcated needle dipped in the vaccine solution. Within 3-4 days of vaccination, a red and itchy swelling would form at the site, which would then transform into a pus-filled blister and eventually scab over.
Routine smallpox vaccination came to an end in the United States in 1972. Following the World Health Organization's declaration in 1980 that smallpox had been eradicated worldwide, the administration of the vaccine was also halted.
