Unbelievable Mall Built Around a Massive Historic Rock That Could Not Be Demolished
Located in the town of Haabneeme, Estonia, the Viimsi Shopping Centre boasts a feature rarely seen in architectural history. Rising in the very heart of the shopping centre is a gargantuan rock block, with a circumference of 22 meters and a height reaching approximately 6 meters when considering its buried portion underground. This colossal mass, which captivates the attention of supermarket shoppers the most, is actually a living historical monument that has survived from the last Ice Age.
Everything began in September 2014, when the owners of the shopping mall initiated the foundational excavation, in line with their investment plans.
Upon the collision of excavators with a massive boulder, the workers planned to shatter and dynamite this gigantic rock that was obstructing the construction site. However, upon hearing the situation, the people of Haabneeme rose up in protest. The locals, who started a resistance against the construction company by saying 'It's unthinkable to destroy such a valuable stone,' were justified by the investigations of geologists who arrived in the region.
The geologists revealed that this enormous mass was not just an ordinary stone, but a rare 'erratic rock block' that was transported and left here by melting glaciers approximately 10,000 years ago when the last Ice Age ended. It became legally impossible to destroy this historic stone, which offers valuable geological clues to the scientific world about past Ice Ages and is under protection status.
The construction company, which had already invested a colossal amount into the project, was left with only one option: to construct the shopping mall around the rock.
When the shopping center first opened its doors, this colossal rock mass standing in the middle of the corridor struck people as a rather peculiar and conspicuous structure. However, as the years rolled by, both the townsfolk and the tourists visiting for shopping grew entirely accustomed to this extraordinary sight.
Today, supermarket management is employing creative solutions to adapt this natural heritage to modern life.
The colossal rock, dating back 10,000 years, now stands in the middle of the stores, serving as a unique display case for local artists to showcase their work and for artistic installations. People no longer visit this place solely for grocery shopping, but also to touch a glacial legacy that hails from prehistoric times.
