Turkish Comedian Deniz Goktas Detained After His Viral Stand-Up Sparks Investigation
Following the massive viral success of his new political stand-up show 'Ölü Deniz', Turkish comedian Deniz Göktaş was detained at the airport upon returning from a vacation abroad. The artist is currently facing an official investigation for allegedly 'insulting religious values,' sparking widespread debates over freedom of speech and comedy in Turkey.
Comedian Deniz Göktaş has been detained.
An investigation was initiated against comedian Deniz Göktaş on charges of 'insulting religious values' following his stand-up show 'Ölü Deniz' (Dead Sea), performed at Harbiye and uploaded to YouTube, where it garnered millions of views.
Addressing allegations on social media that he had 'fled the country,' Göktaş clarified that he was merely on vacation following his tour and editing work. He stated:
'Hello, as I had planned all year, I went on vacation with my friends with just three t-shirts and three boxers as soon as my tour and editing were finished. I don't know if traveling is a crime, but those who share this like intelligence reports can also see that I paid a substantial fee for paid military service on June 22. I will be in the country for many years :) If a situation arises that requires me to be in Turkey, I will return on the first flight; the limited number of t-shirts is pushing it.'
Upon returning to Turkey from his vacation, Göktaş was detained by authorities at the airport.
Journalist İsmail Saymaz commented on the investigation, stating: 'I hope this remains just an investigation and gets closed. Because we should not enter an era in Turkey where comedy cannot be performed and even a stand-up comedian cannot express themselves freely.'
The 90-minute show became a major agenda item in Turkey, reaching over 8 million views in just four days.
Notably, Göktaş chose to keep advertisements completely turned off for this video. According to YouTube data in Turkey, where the average Cost Per Mille (CPM) is around $1.50, a video of this length with mid-roll ads could have generated substantial revenue. Experts estimate that with high watch times and views from the diaspora, the potential lost revenue for the first few days alone was between 600,000 TL and 800,000 TL, potentially exceeding 1.5 million TL as the video approaches 10 million views.
