Thousands Applied, They Were Chosen: Couple to Live on Island Empty Since 1953
Situated off the coast of Dingle in Ireland, amidst the turbulent waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Great Blasket Island is gearing up to host a brave couple who wish to escape the stress of modern life, yet are bold enough to give up its comforts. This year, the highly coveted and globally recognized 'island caretaker' role, which annually attracts thousands of applicants, has been awarded to Aisling Costello and her partner Conor Jones from Kilkenny, Ireland.
The greatest challenge for the couple in this adventure, which will span throughout the summer season, will be the primitive living conditions on the island.
There is no permanent infrastructure for electricity and hot water on Great Blasket Island. On this island, where everything from charging phones to taking showers is limited to what nature provides, a tough life awaits the couple.
In the job posting that was published, it was specifically emphasized that the role involved much more than just 'relaxing.' On the contrary, it was highlighted that it carried a rather 'intense' responsibility.
The daily tasks for Aisling and Conor on the island will be as follows:
Assuming the management of the three rental cabins on the island,
Hosting the guests who come to visit and stay on the island,
Carrying out the cleaning, maintenance, and repair tasks of the cabins,
Single-handedly running the daily operations and order on the island.
Aisling Costello, who stated that applying for this job has been a long-standing dream of hers, expressed great surprise and joy when they learned they were accepted among thousands of applicants. Costello, who mentioned that many people around her found their choice of this challenging lifestyle 'crazy', asserted their determination by saying, 'For us, it was more about the desire to gain a unique experience that we will never forget, rather than money.'
In the mid-19th century, Great Blasket Island, home to approximately 175 individuals, gradually lost its population over the years. This was due to its complete isolation from the mainland, the harsh weather conditions, and the inability to provide even the most basic human services such as healthcare and education.
When the calendars marked the year 1953, the island was completely deserted and left to its fate.
Now, this desolate ocean island, leaving thousands of people behind, will find life again through the efforts of two young souls who embarked on their journey, relying solely on each other and nature.
