They Moved a Giant Plane Piece by Piece Into the Forest and Turned It Into a Luxury Hotel
Hotel Costa Verde, located in Costa Rica, has completely transformed a 1965 Boeing 727, which once served as a passenger aircraft. The enormous plane, transported piece by piece from San Jose Airport, now stands amidst the rainforest, serving as a luxurious suite.
He relocated from the airport to the heart of the forest.
The unusual suite called '727 Fuselage Home' by Hotel Costa Verde, was constructed from a Boeing 727 fuselage that was previously in service with South Africa Air and Colombia-based Avianca Airlines.
According to the hotel, the plane was procured from the holding area at San Jose Airport, disassembled, and transported to the forested area of Manuel Antonio by five large trucks.
Subsequently, it was reassembled on the edge of the Manuel Antonio National Park, in the Costa Verde II area. With the plane positioned approximately 15 meters high, an extraordinary accommodation space was created, offering guests views of both the Pacific Ocean and the rainforest.
Its wing transformed into a terrace, its body into a suite.
While the exterior of the Boeing 727 remains largely intact, the interior has undergone a complete overhaul. The aircraft now accommodates two air-conditioned bedrooms, private bathrooms, a snug kitchen area, a dining section, and a living space.
The interior is adorned with wooden details, transitioning the atmosphere from a traditional aircraft to something more akin to a tropical mountain lodge. It's worth noting that the furniture includes hand-carved teak pieces, procured from the Java region of Indonesia.
The aircraft's former right wing has been repurposed into a spacious terrace. This unique feature allows guests to perch on the wing of this immense plane, nestled in the forest, and soak in the ocean view. The hotel touts this suite as 'one of the most distinctive accommodations in Costa Rica.'
Second Life Instead of Scrapyard
What makes the project intriguing is not merely the relocation of the plane into the forest, but also the repurposing of an old passenger aircraft. Instead of being dismantled and sent to the scrapyard, the decommissioned Boeing 727 was transformed into a touristic experience.
In this respect, the project stands out as an example of 'reuse' in architecture. An old means of transportation has been given a completely new narrative, in harmony with its natural surroundings.
Today, guests staying at the Hotel Costa Verde do not reside in a typical hotel room, but inside a genuine Boeing 727 perched atop the rainforest. Moreover, when they look outside, they are greeted not by a runway, but by a view of trees, birds, monkeys, and the Pacific Ocean.
