According to a recent study conducted at the University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign, individuals with certain personality traits tend to gravitate towards specific career fields. The study was carried out on over 600 university students aged between 17 and 32. The participants' personality traits were assessed based on three fundamental structures known in psychology as the 'Dark Triad': psychopathy, Machiavellianism (the belief that any means, even if unethical, are permissible to achieve a goal), and narcissism.
Individuals with traits defined as 'antisocial tendencies' also tend to lean towards professions that require more technical skills and involve less social interaction.

According to the findings of the study, psychopathy strongly correlates with an interest in applied jobs, encompassing its three subcomponents (bravery, ruthlessness, and impulsivity). This category includes fields such as mechanical work, technical maintenance, and engineering. Researchers interpret this tendency as a preference for professions that require low social interaction and offer more isolated working conditions.
However, the professions preferred by narcissistic individuals are quite the opposite. Narcissists tend to gravitate towards careers that provide opportunities for recognition and influence. It's feasible to say that fields such as art, politics, law, and business stand out in this group.
Another significant point of the research concerns 'successful psychopaths' and 'successful narcissists'. Individuals in this group can rapidly ascend within an organization due to their strong social skills and charismatic demeanor. Yet, entrusting such individuals with excessive responsibility may not always yield positive outcomes.
