Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez Supports Lamine Yamal’s Palestine Flag Gesture
Barcelona's young superstar, Lamine Yamal, joined his team's championship celebrations by waving the Palestinian flag atop the victory bus. Yamal's flag-waving act split public opinion, yet the young star received backing from an unexpected source - Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez.
Lamine Yamal, who made significant contributions throughout the season, helped Barcelona clinch the La Liga championship.
This victory over Real Madrid sparked a massive celebration throughout the city. The traditional victory bus also made its grand entrance into the city. Lamine Yamal, who unfurled the Palestinian flag atop the bus, became the highlight of the festivities.
The team's head coach, Flick, had been perturbed by this situation.
The German coach expressed, 'I'm not particularly fond of this. I've had a conversation with him and told him that if he wants to do this, it's entirely his decision. He's 18, legally an adult now. However, we've dedicated ourselves to playing football and we should take into consideration what people expect from us. When you see people on the streets moved to tears, you understand why we're here, and for me, that's the most important thing, the very first thing.'
Israel's Defense Minister Katz also expressed his disapproval towards Yamal.
'As the Minister of Defense for the State of Israel, I will not remain silent in the face of incitement against Israel and the Jewish people.
I hope that a large and respected club like FC Barcelona will unequivocally distance itself from such statements and clarify beyond dispute that there is never room for incitement or support for terrorism.'
Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who has garnered much admiration for his sensitivity towards the Palestine issue, has extended his support to the young actor.
Sanchez stated, 'Those who perceive the act of flying a country's flag as 'inciting hatred' are either out of their minds or blinded by their own shame.
Lamine has simply expressed the solidarity felt by millions of Spaniards towards Palestine. It gives us one more reason to be proud of him.'
