Spaniards Launch Petition for Visa-Free Schengen Access for Turks

For the past two days, a camaraderie between Turkey and Spain has been blossoming on social media. The mutual political stances on certain issues and, most notably, the shared Mediterranean identity, have been causing a stir on both timelines. The steps taken since yesterday have materialized into a concrete campaign, and a petition for visa facilitation has been launched on change.org for the Turks, who are already grappling with the Schengen issue.

I initiated an online campaign targeting Spain and the EU with the aim of simplifying the Schengen visa process for Turkish tourists. Let's see if we can gather thousands of signatures. Spain is one of the neighboring countries where we encounter the most obstacles.

'Ease the Schengen visa process for tourists coming from Turkey. Sign the petition,' was how the campaign was announced.

For now, the campaign has garnered 95 signatures.

Here are the details of the campaign;

Travelers from Turkey, who are looking to visit European Union countries, are facing numerous obstacles when applying for a Schengen visa. The current process is quite burdensome; long waiting periods for appointments, excessive bureaucracy, and a lack of transparency in visa issuance criteria are prevalent. These barriers significantly limit the opportunities for cultural, economic, and social exchange between Turkey and the European Union countries.

According to the latest data from the European Commission, in 2022 alone, approximately 10% of Schengen visa applications from Turkish applicants were rejected; this is one of the highest rejection rates among the EU's neighboring countries. This situation not only disappoints the applicants but also hinders the strengthening of tourism and bilateral relations between Turkey and the Schengen Area member countries.

To improve the situation, we propose the following solutions:

1. Increase the number of available appointments at consulates to process visa applications more efficiently. This will reduce the waiting times that currently affect thousands of Turkish citizens.

2. Simplify visa application procedures and requirements to make the process more accessible, particularly for short and long-term visa applications.

3. Enhance transparency in visa decision processes to help applicants better understand potential reasons for rejection and improve their future applications.

By addressing these issues, the European Union will not only provide a better experience for Turkish tourists, but also promote cultural and economic exchange between nations. Therefore, we invite everyone to sign this petition for a more accessible and hospitable Schengen visa system for tourists coming from Turkey. Sign now to contribute to this necessary change.
