Seismologist Naci Gorur Warns of Istanbul Earthquake
It's been 27 years since the August 17 Marmara Earthquake. Once again, earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Naci Görür has made critical warnings and identified the risk areas in Istanbul. Görür, emphasizing that the earthquake studies conducted in Turkey are not sufficient, stated, 'Urban transformation alone cannot prepare us for an earthquake. If we evaluate it scientifically, what has been done so far is not enough.'

Earthquake expert Naci Görür has issued critical earthquake warnings. Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, who made striking statements about the expected Marmara earthquake, revealed the risky areas in Istanbul.
Naci Görür made the following remarks:
'Most of the districts close to the coast on the European Side will be heavily damaged. This is because the western part of Istanbul that is close to the coast has poor soil quality, solid rock is scarce, there are younger sediments, the groundwater level is high, and it is close to the fault line.
Therefore, all these factors are the reasons that contribute to the potential damage.
However, relatively speaking, the Asian Side, especially the areas on the land side of the E5, not the sea side, are comparatively more solid.'
When will the Istanbul earthquake occur?
One of the most pressing questions in society is, 'When will the Istanbul earthquake occur?' Naci Görür, a renowned earthquake expert, addressed this curiosity with the following words:
'It is expected that an earthquake will occur in the same region within 30 years after 1999. Scientific research conducted after the 1999 Marmara Earthquake indicated that there was over a 60% chance of a major earthquake occurring in Istanbul within 30 years. However, recent studies have revised this risk rate to 48%. Of course, there's a margin of error of about 10-11 years. So, it could be thought of as 15 years plus or minus from the year 2030.'
Drawing attention to the inadequacy of earthquake preparations in Istanbul, Görür continued, 'Studies have been conducted, publications have been made, and the whole world knows it as such. We also know and believe in it. Therefore, we are nearing the end times of the year 2026. Consequently, what has been done so far is not enough.'
