Researchers Discover Which Oil Boosts Brain Health!
We all know that certain foods are beneficial for brain health. But is there a specific type of fat that can boost brain health?
According to a recent study, there is indeed a fat that positively impacts cognitive performance by reshaping the gut microbiota: Extra virgin olive oil.

It has been discovered that extra virgin olive oil is beneficial for brain health.
According to a report by Science Daily, researchers from Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), Pere Virgili Health Research Institute (IISPV), and CIBERobn have embarked on a new study. This research demonstrated that extra virgin olive oil has the potential to improve gut bacteria and indirectly enhance brain health.
Jiaqi Ni, a researcher from the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology at URV, states, 'This is the first prospective study specifically analyzing the role of olive oil in the interaction between gut microbiota and cognitive functions in humans.'
The study scrutinized 656 adults between the ages of 55 and 75 over a two-year period. During this time, the individuals' dietary habits (including consumption of extra virgin and refined olive oil), gut microbiota analyses, and changes in cognitive performance were examined in detail. The findings revealed significant differences depending on the type of olive oil consumed.
While extra virgin olive oil has been found to enhance cognitive functions, negative effects were detected in refined olive oil.
Participants who regularly use extra virgin olive oil were found to have improved cognitive functions and a higher diversity in their gut microbiota. However, individuals consuming refined olive oil showed a decrease in microbiota diversity over time.
Researchers also identified a specific group of gut bacteria called 'Adlercreutzia' that could be associated with these benefits. The presence of this bacteria could be an indicator of the positive correlation between the consumption of extra virgin olive oil and the preservation of cognitive functions.
So, what's the difference between extra virgin and refined olive oil?
Extra virgin olive oil is obtained through mechanical methods that preserve its natural components. On the other hand, refined olive oil undergoes industrial processes to remove impurities, which results in significant differences between the two types of olive oil.
Summarizing the study, Jiaqi Ni states, 'Not all olive oils are beneficial in terms of cognitive function.'
