New Regulation Bans Hanging Laundry on Balconies with Fines up to 80,000 TL
In certain regions of Spain, municipalities have tightened balcony regulations in an effort to preserve the aesthetics of the city. Residents who hang laundry in view from the street, or store beds or gas cylinders, face hefty fines.
Things are no longer going to be the same for those who have been using their balconies as drying areas or storage spaces in Spain.
Particularly in the city of Lorca, located in the Murcia Region, the local government has significantly tightened restrictions on building facades. This was achieved through amendments made in their 'Regulation for the Protection of Citizen Life and Prevention of Social Disorder.'
Under the new regulation approved by the PP and VOX coalition in the city council, hanging clothes on balcony railings and window sills visible from public spaces has been completely prohibited.
The scope of the prohibition isn't limited to merely laundry; it also includes the presence of items such as mattresses, beds, and gas cylinders on balconies, which contribute to visual pollution. These, too, are now subject to penalties.
The new regulation proposes a graduated penalty system, varying in severity depending on the degree of the violation:
Minor Offenses: Hanging clothes on the balcony railing or storing inappropriate items can result in fines ranging from 151 to 750 Euros.
Major Offenses: Installing permanent laundry lines on main facades, or keeping faulty air conditioning and ventilation systems in visible places can attract penalties between 751 and 1,500 Euros.
Lorca's Mayor, Fulgencio Gil, attributed the tightening of regulations to a surge of complaints from local residents and a desire to preserve the city's touristic allure.
The local residents were given approximately a month to bring their balconies and building facades into compliance with the new regulations. It was communicated that at the end of this grace period, no leniency would be granted to those who fail to adhere to the rules.
