Italian PM Giorgia Meloni Sues Over Explicit AI Deepfake Photos Circulating Online
Visual tricks have been employed in the digital realm for many years, but the recent revolution in artificial intelligence has made the manipulation of images both easier and more widespread. Notably, numerous high-profile individuals have voiced their grievances about this issue. Among them is Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy. Meloni made a statement about the photos circulating on social media from her X account.
The statement made by Meloni from the X account is as follows;
In recent days, various counterfeit photos of me have been circulating, artificially generated by artificial intelligence and fed to the public as genuine by some overzealous opponents.
I must admit, in the attached example at least, they've managed to enhance my appearance quite a bit. However, the reality is that any means necessary seems to be justified in their pursuit of attack and fabrication of lies.
Yet, this issue isn't solely about me. Deepfake is a dangerous tool because it has the power to deceive, manipulate, and strike anyone. I can defend myself. Others may not be able to.
Therefore, one rule should always apply: Verify before you believe, believe before you share. Because what's happening to me today, could happen to anyone tomorrow.
