He Burned This Alternative Instead of Wood in His Stove and Cut Heating Costs
Polish YouTuber Marek Hoffmann heated his home by burning 133 supermarket bread rolls in his stove instead of wood briquettes. By his calculations, the rolls produced just as much heat—and cost less.
Here are the details...
Before the experiment, they calculated how much energy the buns would provide.
According to Hoffmann’s calculations, a bun he bought at Lidl contains around 440 kilocalories. A total of 133 buns weighs 10 kilograms and provides roughly 18.5 MJ of energy per kilogram.
That’s almost the same amount of energy released by burning wood briquettes in a stove.
He put pinewood beneath the rolls to start the fire.
When the oil used to fry the buns reached about 230 degrees, it caught fire, setting off a chain reaction. The buns inside the stove turned to embers, and the cast-iron surface heated up to 343 degrees.
The pastries burned for about five hours.
The room temperature rose from 14 to 22 degrees during the experiment. Burning doughnuts turned out to be about 37 percent cheaper than using briquettes.
Based on supermarket prices in Poland, 133 doughnuts cost 12 zlotys, while the wood briquettes Hoffmann used cost 19 zlotys. Since the video was filmed a few days before Fat Thursday, when people in Poland eat large quantities of doughnuts, Hoffmann calculated their cost using last year’s prices.
At the end of the video, Hoffmann also wondered whether it might be better for someone to eat the doughnuts rather than burn them.
