France to Undergo Major Overhaul in Vehicle License Plates
In Europe, like in our country, vehicles on the road can be seen in different formats according to their classes and types. However, France is set to become the first European country to implement one of the most significant changes with its pink license plate initiative. Under this scheme, vehicles with pink plates will be present on the roads.
It has been announced that France is set to make a significant change to its vehicle license plates.

Starting from the early months of 2026, pink temporary license plates will be used in traffic. The reason for this is to facilitate the detection of vehicles that have exceeded their inspection period.
According to a statement from the French Ministry of Transportation, the normally gray-white 'WW' coded temporary plates will turn pink. WW coded temporary plates are given to newly purchased or tested vehicles, and they have a short validity period.
As reported by Plus33, the number of vehicles operating with temporary license plates currently exceeds 460,000.

Nonetheless, the issue of temporary license plates being the same color as the regular ones posed a challenge in easily identifying these vehicles during inspections. The introduction of pink license plates will enhance their visibility during checks by the police or gendarmerie. Furthermore, the inscriptions on the plate's edge will simplify the process of determining whether the validity period has lapsed. This practice is anticipated to be adopted across Europe in due course.
