Flags Become Mandatory on License Plates in Russia
A new regulation concerning license plates will come into effect in Russia starting from the 1st of January. According to this new rule, it will become mandatory to incorporate the Russian flag on the plates.
A new era for vehicle license plates in Russia commences on the 1st of January.
Under the regulation set to come into effect in the new year, it will be mandatory for all vehicles registered from January 1, 2026 onwards to bear the Russian flag on their license plates. Drivers who fail to comply with this new rule will face a penalty of 500 Rubles or a warning. This regulation will be considered as 'non-standard license plate usage' within the scope of the Russian Administrative Offences Law.
Vintage vehicles will be exempt from the regulation.
The new rule will only apply to vehicles registered or re-plated after 2025. Vehicles registered before 2025 will be able to continue their trouble-free journey in traffic with their existing plates.
According to the new GOST standard titled 'State Registration Plates of Road Vehicles', the Russian flag will need to be placed in the bottom right corner of the plate. This practice will become mandatory both for new registrations and for second-hand vehicle sales.
