The global aviation industry is gearing up for the most significant and radical transformation in its history. It seems that the end of the road is in sight for Dubai International Airport (DXB), the heart of global flights and host to the world's busiest international passenger traffic. This giant hub, which welcomes tens of millions of people annually, will permanently close its doors within the next decade.

Behind this ground-breaking decision by the Dubai government lies an astounding mega-project worth a whopping 35 billion dollars. Here are all the details of the massive operation that will shake the foundations of the aviation world...

Situated in the heart of the city and having reached its structural limits, Dubai International Airport (DXB) is set to permanently close its doors by 2035. All commercial flight operations, along with more than 40 major airlines including Emirates, Fly Dubai, Air India, PIA, and Saudia, will be relocated to the newly constructed mega facility, Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), located in the Jebel Ali region to the south of Dubai.

The existing airport, DXB, set formidable records by serving 92 million passengers in 2023, and a staggering 95.2 million in 2025. However, this tremendous volume has brought the physical capacity of the airport to the brink of exhaustion. By 2032, when DXB is expected to reach its annual maximum limit of 114 million passengers, a significant migration to the new mega airport will commence.

Paul Griffiths, the CEO of Dubai Airports, stated that it would be illogical to keep both airports open simultaneously, expressing:

'Once we have created enough capacity at DWC, we will transfer all flights from DXB to there. It doesn't make much sense to operate two major airport hubs that are 70 kilometers apart.'

Endorsed by the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) is set to become the largest airport facility in the world upon its completion.

Here are the mind-blowing features that will set the new mega port apart from the rest of the world:

Passenger Capacity: It will have an annual passenger capacity of a whopping 260 million.

Size: Spanning a massive area of 27 square miles, it will be five times the size of the existing DXB.

Infrastructure: It will feature five parallel runways that can accommodate gigantic planes taking off and landing simultaneously, along with a total of 400 aircraft gates.

Cargo: With the ability to handle 12 million tons of cargo annually, it's set to become the new hub of commerce.

The budget for this colossal project has been announced to be approximately 35 billion dollars (roughly 128 billion dirhams).

The grand migration and the closure of DXB are set to be completed by 2035. However, it will not be until 2057 that the Al Maktoum project will be fully realized in all its phases.
