According to HuffPost, Dr. James Ellison, a psychiatrist at Jefferson Health, says, 'One of the greatest fears of older adults is losing their memory and becoming a burden to others.' Dementia can lead to a person forgetting their address, not remembering why they performed a certain task, or being unable to pay bills they've always managed to cover. Although it's a frightening disease that some people are genetically predisposed to, dementia can also occur due to lifestyle habits.

Experts stress that paying attention to these points won't completely prevent the risk of dementia, but it will also benefit your overall health.

Ignoring the importance of nutrition

Dr. Rudy Tanzi, director of the McCance Center for Brain Health at Massachusetts General Hospital, says, 'We've always said this: What's good for the heart is also good for the brain.' Therefore, the Mediterranean diet, rich in healthy fats, lean meats, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, is recommended.

Neglecting to manage health issues

Experts point out that certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, are risk factors for dementia. Therefore, it's necessary to take precautions against health problems.

Skipping sleep

'People need to get enough sleep because the brain rejuvenates itself during deep sleep and reduces the concentration of beta-amyloid, a toxic protein that contributes to the development of Alzheimer's disease.'

Avoiding socialization

Experts also emphasize the importance of prioritizing social connections: 'We know that loneliness, depression, and isolation are extremely negative for health.'

Excessive alcohol consumption

Numerous recent studies reveal the harmful effects of alcohol on health. It can lead to liver damage, increase the risk of certain types of cancer, and is not good for brain health.

Not exercising

Maintaining an active lifestyle in general can reduce the risk of dementia. You don't necessarily have to go to the gym for this. Opt for walking instead of using a car to run errands.
