Colored Lines on New Tires Have a Hidden Purpose Most Drivers Do Not Know About
The colored stripes running along the tread of new car tires may look decorative at first glance. In fact, they play an important role from the manufacturing line to the warehouse.
Let’s take a closer look.
The stripes make it easy to tell the tires apart at a glance.
The colored lines tell the machines and workers handling the tires which one they’re dealing with. This is especially useful when tires are stacked in large batches, since warehouse staff can’t unload and inspect them one by one.
It’s used at every stage, from the production line to shipping.
The stripes provide information on the production line and make tires easy to identify in storage and during shipping. A manufacturer may produce tires with different compounds for different markets under the same model name. Colored markings help prevent them from getting mixed up, even when regulations vary from one region to another.
The stripes have nothing to do with the tire’s performance.
Color markings don’t tell you anything useful when choosing tires. Instead, check the tire’s size, model, load index, and speed rating.
The date code on the tire shows when it was made. For example, 2125 means it was manufactured in the 21st week of 2025.
The tread stripes show that the tire is new.
The stripes wear off quickly once a tire is driven on the road. So if you can still see them on the tread, the tire is brand-new.
However, this only applies to the tread surface. The stripes often extend into the grooves, where they don’t wear away. In other words, seeing stripes only inside the grooves doesn’t mean the tire has never been used.
