In this remote, mountainous region where Fugate, who united his life with Elizabeth Smith, had four of their seven children born with a completely blue skin tone. The isolation from the outside world, coupled with the absence of migration, led to intermarriages among the Fugate, Smith, Combs, Ritchie, and Stacy families. As a result, the narrowing of the gene pool allowed the 'blue gene' to be passed down through generations.

Research revealed the presence of a rare genetic blood disorder known as methemoglobinemia within the family.

Unbeknownst to them, both Martin Fugate and his wife Elizabeth Smith were carriers of this rare recessive gene.

Due to the lack of an enzyme that converts methemoglobin back into normal hemoglobin in the body, the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity decreased. This led to the family members' blood turning a deep brown color, and their skin taking on a distinctive blue hue.

The methemoglobin levels in the blood of the blue-skinned individuals ranged from 10% to 20%. Although this condition altered their skin color, it did not lead to any serious health issues, and the family members lived long lives.

Dr. Cawein implemented a surprising method to turn patients' skin pink: injecting methylene blue into the body.

A few minutes after the injection, balance was restored in the blood and the blue color disappeared. The family members then regained their normal skin tones with daily tablet therapy.

The opening up of the region, coupled with the treatment processes, reduced the number of the blue clan. The last known member of the family, Benjamin 'Benjy' Stacy, was born in 1975 with a purplish skin tone. It was reported that over time, Benjy's skin color returned to normal, with his lips and fingertips only turning blue when he was extremely cold or angry.
