A Journey through Time: The Birth of Robert College

A Journey through Time: The Birth of Robert College

Founding Visionaries

In 1863, American educator and architect Cyrus Hamlin, alongside merchant Christopher Rheinlander Robert, embarked on a visionary mission to establish Robert College. The college opened its doors on September 16, 1863, in Bebek, making it the first American college outside the United States. Beginning with only four male students in a wooden building, Robert College set the stage for pioneering education in Turkey.

The Transition to Boğaziçi University

As the years passed, Robert College faced financial challenges, with a series of transformations occurring before it eventually evolved into Boğaziçi University. In January 26, 1971, the university's Board of Trustees approved the establishment of an independent university named Boğaziçi University, marking a new era in its history. The Turkish Grand National Assembly ratified the transition, and on September 10, 1971, the campus, buildings, library, and laboratories of the Bebek campus were formally transferred to Turkey, signifying the birth of Boğaziçi University.
